Following the April 3 Hualien earthquake and the impact of Typhoons Gaemi, Krathon, and Kong-rey, high-mountain trails within the jurisdiction of Taroko National Park Headquarters (hereafter referred to as Taroko N. P. HQ) — including those leading to Nanhu Mountain, Qilai Mountain, Pingfeng Mountain, Bilü Mountain, and Yangtou Mountain — have been damaged and are temporarily closed. Entry permits are not being issued at this time. Taroko N. P. HQ urges the public to refrain from entering these areas for safety reasons; violators will be fined.
Taroko N. P. HQ states that Mt. Nanhu, Mt. Qilai, Mt. Pingfeng, Mt. Bilü, and Mt. Yangtou are popular routes for mountain enthusiasts. However, due to consecutive typhoons and the earthquake, these high-mountain areas have suffered extensive landslides, trail collapses, and damage to facilities, leading to their temporary closure. Recently, Taroko N. P. HQ observed some individuals attempting unauthorized entry to the closed trails at Qilai Mountain and Pingfeng Mountain. Such actions violate Article 15 of the “Prohibited Activities in Taroko National Park” regulations, which states: “Entry into closed trails within the National Park, or straying from routes of open trails, is prohibited.” Violators may face fines ranging from NT$1,500 to NT$3,000.
Taroko N. P. HQ appeals to mountain enthusiasts to plan hikes at other open locations. The combined effects of the earthquake and multiple typhoons have severely impacted roads, ecosystems, and facilities within Taroko N. P. HQ’s jurisdiction. Given the widespread damage and extensive facility repairs required, the HQ urges hikers not to enter any closed areas for safety reasons. Taroko N. P. HQ will collaborate with the Ninth Division, The Seventh Special Police Corps, Ministry of the Interior, to enhance inspections and enforce regulations against unauthorized entry.
Taroko N. P. HQ is actively working on trail and facility restoration and advises the public to consult the official website for updates on trail access. Until repairs are completed, please avoid visiting high-risk areas, including Pingfeng, Bilü, Yangtou, Qilai, and Nanhu Mountains.
