• Visitors should beware of falling rocks on the road and trails, especially after heavy rains, typhoons and earthquakes.
• Be aware of giant hornets and poisonous snakes while using the trails. The climate is sub-tropical, with mild winters and hot, wet summers. (only low altitude areas.) Light weight clothing is suggested for hot temperatures. Long sleeves, pants, sturdy shoes, and bug repellent will make hiking more pleasant.
• The Central Cross-Island Highway ascends from lower elevation to high elevation areas with accompanying drastic climatic changes. Visitors who are heading for the mid- and high-elevation areas must prepare warm clothing. In addition, the stretch of road from Xinbaiyang to Guanyuan tends to be foggy. Drivers must be very careful.
• The perimeters of the Central Cross-Island Highway and the trails next to the road may experience ground instability such as land slides or rock falls within one week after of torrential rains or earthquakes. Visitors should avoid these places or exercise extra caution.
• Small rock falls may often be a portent of big rock falls. Thus, when you observe such occurrence, you must be vigilant, depart the area quickly, and alert others in the area. When a rock fall occurs or when you hear the sound of rock fall and are unable to leave quickly, then you should crouch down close to the mountain face and hold your arms above your head for protection.
• At elevations above 700 meters, because the oxygen gradually thins and atmospheric pressure drops, this may induce in certain persons the syndromes of rapid breathing, faster heart beats, or asthma, fatigue, vomiting etc. These are typical of mountain sickness. When this happens, please proceed to a lower elevation places right away.
• When you encounter wildlife, please keep your distance for safety sake. Do not harass or feed the animals.
• During the summer and autumn seasons, poisonous snakes and potentially dangerous giant hornets can be encountered. Please be careful.
• A mere spark could raze a whole plain. Please take care of all sources of fire.
• If you want to enter high-mountainous areas, you must prepare all necessary mountaineering equipment, acquire an access permit for entering an ecological protection area and a mountain access permit. A qualified high-mountain guide is advised. (No need for a guide now, the requirement for a qualified high-mountain guide has been cancelled since Jan. 2003, but it depends on your team members' need.) • The most scenic spot could also be the most dangerous spot. Please always take care of your personal and teammates' safety. Also, please maintain the cleanliness of the environment. We further request visitors to obey the regulations stipulated in the National Parks Act and refrain from the prohibited activities proclaimed therein.
• Please take close notice of weather conditions. Never enter a mountainous area when there is a typhoon warning in effect. We sincerely request the close cooperation of our mountaineering friends in this regard. Mountains will always be there, but you get only one life. Please treasure your precious life and the rescue resources of the nation.
