Taroko National Park Partially Reopens After Earthquake

Taroko National Park in Taiwan partially reopened on April 12, 2024, after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the island on April 3. The earthquake caused significant damage to the park's infrastructure, including roads, trails, and visitor facilities.

 

The following areas of the park are open:

Hehuan Mountain Area (including Hehuan Main Peak, Xiaoqilai, and Hehuan Northwest Peak trails, MT. Shimen Trail) (April 12)

Qilai Mountain Area (excluding Qilai East Ridge) (April 16)

Nanhu Mountain Area (Nanhu Main Peak Trail only,NOT including North Section 1) (April 16)

Pingfeng Mountain (April 16)

Mt. Shuan (April 16)

The following visitor facilities are also open:

 

Xiaofengkou (April 12)

Dayuling (April 12)

The park's Hehuan Mountain Rhododendron Festival is scheduled to begin on April 13. The Taiwan Highway Administration will implement high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) restrictions during the festival. However, due to the ongoing aftershocks and the risk of falling rocks, visitors are advised to enter the park via Taiwan Provincial Highway 14A whenever possible.

 

The park urges visitors to exercise caution and avoid entering damaged areas.
