Provincial Highway 8 Traffic Control Information for December 2022. Road opens 3 times a day passage for road users between Mt. Hehuan Police Station (114.6 km) and Jinma Tunnel East Opening (120.6 km) on Provincial Highway 8.

Road partially Open /Road closed Guanyuan section at 117.4 km

The serious landslides occurred at 117 km + 400 m (Guanyuan section) on November 16, 2022. Traffic controls will be implemented from November 16, 2022 to ensure safe passage of people and vehicles. Provincial Highway 8 is closed for repair at 117.4 km at Guanyuan Section for 24 hours including public holidays and weekends.

Provincial Highway 8 & 14A (14 Jia) Traffic Control Information for December 2022

 

The Fourth Maintenance Office of the Directorate General of Highways, MOTC (Taroko Works Division) is responsible for the maintenance of road safety within Taroko National Park. There will be roadwork between 32.7 km – 41.5 km on Provincial Highway 14A (14Jia) and 110.2 km – 187.7 km on Provincial Highway 8 (Dayuling – Taroko) from December 1, 2022 –December 31, 2022.

Specifically:  

1. Provincial Highway 8 at 155 km + 680 m (Xuejiachang section- near Xibao) for the Slope Improvement Construction Work

Traffic Control Time: 8:00 am – 17:00 pm

Control Period: December 13, 2022– December 31, 2022

Every 1 hour on the half hour for 10 minutes (e.g. 08:30 – 08:40, 09:30 – 09:40, 10:30 – 10:40 etc.)

Open one direction of traffic once at a time for both direction traffic.

 

2. Provincial Highway 8 at 162 km + 200 m ( Huitouwan section) for the Slope Improvement Construction Work

Traffic Control Time: 8:00 am – 17:00 pm

Control Period: December 13, 2022– December 31, 2022

Every 1 hour on the hour for 10 minutes (e.g. 08:00 – 08:10, 09:00 – 09:10, 10:00 – 10:10 etc.)

Open one direction of traffic once at a time for both direction traffic.

Traffic controls for #1-2 construction sites do not apply on weekends and public holidays.

3. Road closed section: Provincial Highway 8 is closed for repair between 114.6 km and 120.6 km. The traffic control section will be opened traffic 3 times a day, once in the morning and twice in the afternoon. The 3 passage time period is (1) 7:00 am - 8:00 am, (2) 12:00 pm to 13:00 pm and (3) 15:00 pm -15:30 pm. Please plan your trip accordingly. No people or vehicles are allowed to pass this section of highway beyond the above passage time.

Road Closed Control Period: December 1, 2022– December 31, 2022 (24hr)

**Take the alternative route. Bond for west Taiwan to Taichung or Nantou 

Take the Provincial Highway 9 from Xincheng, Hualien – Provincial Highway 9 – Su'ao, Freeway 5 - Nangang System Interchange Taipei, Freeway 3 –Wufeng System Interchange at 214 km, Freeway 3 (Taichung) – Freeway 6 (0 km start point) – Puli (Puli exit, Freeway 6 end) – Turning left to Highway 14 – Wushe (at Y fork Turning left) – Highway 14 Jia (Provincial Highway 14A) – Qingjing Farm (Nantou county) – Mt. Hehuan. It takes about 7 hours from Xincheng, Hualien to Mt. Hehuan.  

Time required: about 6 - 7 hrs (Hualien – Mt. Hehuan areas)

Please plan your trip accordingly.

 

Visitors who are planning to visit Taroko Gorge (the 19 km section between Taroko – Tianxiang) will be not affected by the above list #1-2 (for both directions). Visitors who are heading to Taichung or Puli, Nantou from Taroko National Park Headquarters via Provincial Highway 8 & 14A (14Jia) will be affected by #1-3 of the above list (for both directions). Please use the substitute route to reach Mt. Hehuan area, Nantou, or Taichung.

The Directorate General of Highways urges drivers that, after a week after earthquake or heavy rain, roads in mountain areas are prone to rockfall and that it is advisable to avoid driving on these roads. Please remember to check the Provincial Highway real-time road condition bulletin, listen to police traffic road broadcasts, pay attention to road traffic related information, and plan your itinerary ahead of your trip.
