Abstract Earlier climbing activities in the Taroko range were very limited. Multi-pitch route was only recorded for Bai-sa (White Sand) Peak. As cliffs at higher ranges are usually strongly weathered, this research set eyes mainly at lower areas of Qing-shui (Ching-shui) cliff and eastern part of Li-wu stream. From the assessment of climbing possibilities, possible climbs found at: Her-ren, Ren-qing, Between Canyon Bridge and Jing-wen Bridge, downstream of Chang-chun Bridge (Mystery Valley (opposite entrance)Rock), Between Chun-huei Bridge and Chang-chun Bridge (aka. Ho-hua-yuan), Central Cross Island Highway 184K to 185K and upstream of Ning-an Bridge north bank, Bai-sa (White Sand) Bridge (Li-wu stream bouldering), Tzu-mu (mother) Bridge Climbable but not too many options: Da-qing-shui (Great Clear Water), Huei-der, Tzung-der, downstream Jing-wen Bridge north bank Possible climbs but stream-crossing first: Sa-ka-dang, Central Cross Island Highway 185K5 Not recommended: Swallow Grotto, Zue-lu, Fu-ji, 9 Turns, L?shui, Xio-fu, Tien-xiang, Bai-yang Trail, Wen-shan Rappelling and training: i) upstream north bank of Jing-wen Bridge ii) hills behind Visitor Center iii) close to the parking lot of Chang-chun Temple In view of safety, convenience, distribution of route difficulties; we recommend two main areas of Her-ren (Ho-jen) sea cliff and areas between Chun-huei Bridge / Chang-chun new Bridge at the first stage.
