Cold Weather Advisory: Taroko National Park HQ Urges Visitors to Check Road Conditions, Keep Warm, and Plan Flexible Schedules to Safely Enjoy Winter at Mt. Hehuan

As winter approaches, temperatures at Mt. Hehuan have dropped significantly, and snowfall may occur in the near future. The Taroko National Park Headquarters (Taroko N. P. HQ) warmly reminds visitors that temperature differences between mountainous areas and lowlands can be extreme. Those planning to travel to higher elevations should ensure adequate cold-weather protection and make thorough preparations. In particular, some road sections have recently experienced icing, which greatly increases the risk of vehicle skidding. Drivers are advised to slow down, remain alert to road conditions, and prioritize travel safety.

In recent years, Mt. Hehuan has become a popular destination during holidays for watching sunrises and photographing starry skies. However, alpine scenery is captivating at any time of day, and visitors are not required to rush up the mountain during early morning hours. Due to limited road capacity and parking spaces in the Mt. Hehuan area, holiday traffic congestion is common. Taroko N. P. HQ recommends staggering travel times to avoid peak congestion, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing light and mountain scenery at a more relaxed pace and to savor a journey of their own.

Influenced by the northeastern monsoon, certain sections of the Mt. Hehuan roads are currently icy, with slippery surfaces and reduced visibility. Temperatures drop even further late at night and in the early morning, increasing the risk of vehicles losing control or colliding. Taroko N. P. HQ therefore advises visitors to avoid late-night or fatigued driving. When traveling to Mt. Hehuan in winter, motorists should prepare snow chains in advance and be familiar with how to install and remove them; drive slowly and remain vigilant for icy and snowy road conditions; and refrain from illegal parking that obstructs traffic, ensuring adequate safety clearance. Before departure, travelers are encouraged to check the Highway Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications website and the Mt. Hehuan highway CMS electronic message boards for real-time traffic control information and snow-chain requirements, ensuring a safer and more secure trip.

Finally, Taroko N. P. HQ emphasizes that low temperatures in high-altitude areas pose a risk of hypothermia. In the past, there have been cases in which visitors suffered physical discomfort or required emergency assistance due to insufficient clothing. Medical access in mountainous areas is limited; therefore, visitors should bring warm jackets, hats, gloves, and other cold-weather gear, and carefully assess whether conditions are suitable for their own physical condition before heading uphill.

The winter beauty of Mt. Hehuan can be appreciated at any time. By traveling safely during off-peak hours and preparing properly for cold conditions, visitors can truly enjoy the wonders and serenity that nature has to offer. Taroko N. P. HQ sincerely reminds everyone to follow the principles of“safe planning, adequate warmth, and flexible scheduling”to ensure that every journey is both beautiful and worry-free.
