Natural Treks

The following trails are currently open:

Taroko Visitor Center:
Grade 2 Trail: Dekalun Trail – Total length: 1.3 km. The trail is steep uphill, please evaluate your physical condition before hiking. This trail continues on to the Dali–Datong Village Trail.

Grade 3 Trail: Dali–Datong Village Trail – The initial section is steep uphill, please assess your physical conditions before setting out.      

Hiking to Dali Village takes about 3–4 hours round trip.

        Hiking to Datong Village takes longer; an overnight stay is recommended. (10-12 hours a round trip)

        Please arrange accommodation in advance. For lodging in Dali or Datong Village, contact the Tongi Tribal Eco and Cultural Association:

        Same-day round trips to Datong Village are not recommended.

        Bring your own sufficient water, food, and trekking poles. There are no shops along the trail.

⚠️ Notice:

Due to serious damage from the April 3rd earthquake, the Shakadang Trail remains closed and is under reconstruction. For your safety, do not enter the closed trail area from Dali or Datong Village.

**Tianxiang Recreation Area:  Partial trails including the Tianxiang Visitor Center, Tabido Trail, and Xiangde Temple area are open. Visitors can enjoy the natural ecosystem, observe wildlife, and learn about the history of the Truku people.

**Lushui Recreation Area: Starting from February 1, 2026, sections of the Lushui Trail and Lushui-Wenshan Trail are open to the public:
**Grade 1 Trail: Lushui Trail (Partially Open): Starting from Lushui, the trail is open up to the Small Suspension Bridge (approximately the 250 meters mark). Please return via the same route. Duration: Approx. 15 mins one-way / 30 mins round-trip. 

**Grade 3 Trail: Lushui-Wenshan Trail (Partially Open):  Starting from Lushui, the trail is open up to Tuoyuen (approximately the 450 meters mark). This is a challenging route with many uphill sections. Visitors are advised to carefully assess their physical condition before setting out.  Please return via the same route.
Duration: Approx. 30 mins one-way / 1 hour round-trip.

Provincial Highway 9 (Su-hua Hihgway) section: 
**Chongde Recreation Area: Chongde Trail (Partially Open): Open to the second viewing platform. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Qingshui Cliffs from the north entrance of the Chongde Tunnel.
Following the devastating earthquke on April 3, 2024, many trails and spots in the gorge seciton of Taroko National Park sustained server damage.  The Grade 1 (easy) trails are still closed. The eastern side of Taroko National Park, including the Taroko~Tianxiang Gorge section, sustained severe damage from the 403 Earthquake on April 3, 2024. As a result, Grade 1, Grade 2, and some Grade 3 trails and scenic spots along Provincial Highway 8 remain closed.

Note: The tour suggestions shown on our website are just the reference for visitors. The park does not run any tours for tourists.
For a day set(paid) tour for east Taiwan (Hualien), please take “Taiwan tour bus” suggested by Tourism Bureau of Taiwan.
Please get on Taiwan Tour Bus's website for the tour reservation ahead of your requested date (There is no  English speaking guide available only offering QR Code scanning for English info.).

According to different travel agents, the price will be different. A day trip  depart from  Hualien bus Terminal (Station) in front of Hualien railway station.

Nature Trek Suggestion A:
A natural trek along the Jiuqudong (Tunnel of Nine Turns) Trail (estimated time required: 4-5 hours). The must-see trail which the Tunnel of Nine Turns Trail- a 2 kilometer hike in Taroko National Park. Route: Taroko Visitor Center (Hwy. No. 8, 184.5 km)---Buluowan (Hwy. No. 8, 177.8 km)---Swallow Grotto (Hwy. No. 8, 176.9 km)---Tianxiang (Hwy. No. 8 167.4 km) ---Jiuqudong Trail (Hwy. No. 8, 173.7 km)---Eternal Spring (Changchun) Shrine (Hwy. No. 8, 186 km) ---Qingshui Cliff (Hwy. No. 9, 180.4 km)

Nature Trek Suggestion B:
HA hike along the Baiyang foot trail (time requirement: 4-5 hours). Route: Taroko Visitor Center(Hwy. No. 8, 189 km) --- Baiyang waterfall Trail(Hwy. No. 8, 168 km) Brief introduction to the trek: You can drive your car to the starting point of the trek (there is a car park at the lower right hand side by the highway about 50 meters ahead of the trailhead). Or you can take a bus, (Hualien Bus Co.) get off at Tianxiang and walk along the Central Cross-Island Highway westward for about 500 meters to reach the trailhead. En route, you can enjoy the sceneries of the gorge. In addition, you can also choose another trail (such as Sakadang, Lushui, Jiuqudong, Changchun Shrine Trails etc.) to make it a full day's trekking.

Nature Trek Suggestion C:
A hike along the Lushui Trail (time requirement: 4-5 hours) Route: Taroko Visitor Center (Park Headquarters) (Hwy. No. 8, 189 km) --- Tianxiang (Hwy. No. 8, 170 km) ---Lushui Trail(Hwy. No. 8, 172 km) . Brief introduction to the trek: This trek starts from Tianxiang on a return leg of 2 km at Lushui. The trailhead is located near an exhibition hall left of the highway. You can complete the trail (trail entrance is opposite of the Heliu Campground) and then take a rest at Tianxiang before taking another trail.
