Transportation: How can I reach Sun Moon Lake from Taroko National Park?

There is no direct form of public transportation from Taroko National Park to Sun Moon Lake. The fastest route is to take a train from TRA Hualien or TRA Xincheng-Taroko Station to Taipei Main Station, and then travel to Sun Moon Lake either: (a) via Kuo-Kuang Bus #1833 from Taipei Bus Station (cheaper); (b) via Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) from Taipei to Taichung (1 hour) then via the Sun Moon Lake Shuttle Bus (2 hours) (faster).

If you wish to drive to Sun Moon Lake from Taroko National Park, please follow: (a) Provincial Highway 8 (the Central Cross-Island Highway) from Taroko National Park Headquarters to Dayuling; (b) Provincial Highway 14A (14Jia) from Dayuling to Puli Township; (c) Provincial Highway 21 from Puli Township to Sun Moon Lake. The entire drive is between 4 to 5 hours. Please be aware that there is snow control in the higher elevation sections of Highway 14A (14Jia) in the winter season, and occasional road works within Taroko National Park, which are listed on the Park Website: # News/Roads & Trails

Due to the April 3, 2024 huge earthquake, please do not enter from the east side of the park using the Provincial Highway 8 from Taroko to Dayuling. There are still risks of mudslides and rockfalls. Please do not enter the east side of Taroko gorge using Provincial Highway 8. Please enter from west Taiwan from Puli (Natou County) to Sun Moon Lake instead.
