Traffic Control Notice for Provincial Highway 8 (Central Cross-Island Highway)
Due to the rising water level of the Liwu River caused by the Swallow Grotto landslide-dammed lake, the section of Provincial Highway No. 8 (Central Cross-Island Highway) between Tianxiang and Taroko (167.7k–184.5k) has been closed to traffic starting from 17:30.
At around 175.5k near the west portal of the Jinheng Tunnel (along the old Central Cross-Island Highway section beside the Taroko Gorge), a landslide occurred on the upper slope today (Oct. 17th, 2025), blocking the Liwu River with a large volume of debris and forming a landslide-dammed lake. The river’s water level continues to rise and is estimated to overflow onto the highway surface by around 19:00 today. For the safety of road users, the Taroko Maintenance Section of the Directorate General of Highways (DGH) has notified scenic area hotels along the route to evacuate guests and has implemented traffic control measures.
From 17:30, entry between Tianxiang and Taroko (167.7k–184.5k) is prohibited (“exit only”), and from 18:00, the entire section is fully closed.
Tomorrow (18th), the previously scheduled daytime opening between Guanyuan and Tianxiang (116.4k–167.1k) from 06:00 to 16:30 will remain in effect.
However, the daytime five-time openings between Tianxiang and Taroko (167.7k–184.5k) at 06:00–08:00, 10:00–10:05, 12:00–13:00, 15:00–15:05, and 17:00–17:30 are suspended until further notice pending disaster assessment.
The DGH urges road users to avoid entering mountain roads unless necessary, especially after earthquakes or during typhoons and heavy or prolonged rainfall, as such roads are prone to landslides and falling rocks, and conditions can change rapidly.
Please stay informed of weather forecasts and road conditions, plan ahead, and take precautions accordingly.
For the latest updates, visit the DGH’s Real-Time Highway Information System at https://168.thb.gov.tw download the “Happy Highway” app, or listen to road condition broadcasts.
The Directorate General of Highways wishes everyone a safe journey.
