Provincial Highway 8 (Central Cross-Island Highway, Dayuling → Taroko Entrance)
Traffic Control Measures for August 2025

Since the April 3, 2024 earthquake, the Taroko Maintenance Section of the Eastern Region Branch, Directorate General of Highways (DGH), has been balancing road reconstruction progress with local residents’ transportation and livelihood needs. At the end of each month, the Section invites residents, civic groups, local businesses, and relevant agencies from the Tinaxiang area to discuss and plan the traffic control measures for the following month.
The following traffic measures apply throughout August 2025:
I. Guanyuan → Tinaxiang (114.6 km – 167.3 km)

After the daily dawn patrol and rockfall clearing confirm that the road is safe, traffic will be open 06:00 – 16:30.

16:30 – 18:30: control gates at 114.6 km (Guanyuan / Hehuan Police Station) and 167.3 km (Tinaxiang, west end) will be closed – exit only, no entry.

18:30 – 06:00 (next day): nighttime road closure.

II. Tinaxiang → Taroko Entrance (167.7 km – 184.5 km)

After the morning patrol confirms the road is safe, five daily release windows will be implemented:(1) 06:30 – 08:00 (2) 10:00–10:05 (3) 12:00–13:00 (4) 15:00–15:05 (5) 17:00–17:30

Note: During the short 10:00 and 15:00 releases, only vehicles already waiting at control gates may pass. Please arrive the control point 10 minutes ahead of the release time.

17:30 – 18:30: control gates at 167.7 km (Tinaxiang, east end) and Shakadang Tunnel east portal will be closed – exit only, no entry.

18:30 – 06:30 (next day): nighttime road closure.

Vehicles waiting at either end of the above work zones during release times will be allowed to pass before road closure resumes.

One-way split traffic (Taroko Entrance ↔ Changchun Tunnel):

Westbound (Taroko → Tinaxiang): Shakadang Tunnel → Xila’an Tunnel → Changchun Tunnel → Tinaxiang.

Eastbound (Tinaxiang → Taroko): Provincial Highway 8 → Changchun Tunnel → Taroko Entrance.

III. Temporary / Mobile Work Zones

Short-term traffic control for additional projects (e.g., asphalt milling and paving) will be conducted dynamically and will coordinate with existing control gates and release windows to minimize impact. If necessary, separate announcements will be issued.
Important Reminder for Drivers (Full 74 km section: Dayuling → Taroko Entrance)

Eastbound (Dayuling → Taroko): You are advised to reach Tinaxiang before 17:00 to avoid missing the 17:00 – 17:30 release window.

Westbound (Taroko → Dayuling): You are advised to pass the Shakadang Tunnel east portal before 15:00 to avoid missing the 16:30 westbound closure at Guanyuan.

Due to ongoing slope stabilization and road repairs, traffic release times may be delayed or cancelled without notice due to weather or emergency conditions. Drivers should plan accordingly and check for real-time updates.

1. 104.9 km – 107 km (Baimi River Bridge Elevated Section)
Mobile road sweeping every Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00. Please follow on-site instructions and drive cautiously.
2. 104.1 km – 113.4 km (Su’ao Tunnel, Dong’ao Tunnel, Dongyue Tunnel)
Electrical and mechanical (E&M) inspection and maintenance from January 2 to December 31, 2025, daily from 08:00 to 18:00, excluding holidays. Fixed-location operations in turnaround spaces. Please follow traffic control personnel and drive with caution.
3. 104.182 km – 113.102 km (Dong’ao Tunnel southbound)
Traffic control system maintenance on July 8, 21:00 to July 9, 05:00. Southbound lane closed. Please follow instructions to detour via Provincial Highway 9D.
4. 104.182 km – 112.913 km (Su’ao, Dong’ao, Dongyue Tunnels)
Tunnel facility cleaning on August 6–7, 08:00 to 17:00 daily. Dynamic traffic control in effect. Please follow on-site personnel.

Mobile sweeping every Wednesday from 14:00 to 15:00.
3. 124.497 km – 145.061 km (Nan’ao to Heping Section)
E&M inspection and maintenance from January 2 to December 31, 08:00 to 21:00 daily, excluding holidays. Fixed-location operations in turnout bays. Please follow traffic control personnel.
4. 127.882 km – 141.773 km (Wuta Tunnel, Guanyin Guyun Tunnel)
Tunnel facility cleaning on July 31 and August 1, 08:00 to 17:00 daily. Single-lane dynamic traffic control. Please follow on-site personnel.
5. 124.497 km – 145.061 km (Guanyin Guyun Tunnel southbound)
Traffic system maintenance on August 12, 08:00 to 19:00. Right lane closed (not full closure). Please follow traffic control personnel.
6. 124.497 km – 145.061 km (Guanyin Guyun Tunnel northbound)
Traffic system maintenance on August 11, 08:00 to 19:00. Right lane closed (not full closure). Please follow instructions.
7. 104.9 km – 107 km (Baimi River Bridge Elevated Section)
Mobile sweeping on August 5, 10:00–11:00 and 14:00–15:00. Alternating northbound/southbound closure. Please drive with caution.

1. 149.117 km – 153.942 km (Zhongren Tunnel)
E&M inspection and maintenance from January 2 to December 31, 08:00 to 21:00 daily, excluding holidays. Fixed-location operations in turnout bays.
2. 149.117 km – 153.941 km (Zhongren Tunnel northbound)
Jet fan replacement from July 28 to August 4, 20:00 to 06:00 daily, northbound closure. Detour via Provincial Highway 9D. (No work August 1–3.)
3. 149.117 km – 153.941 km (Zhongren Tunnel)
Tunnel facility cleaning on August 4, 08:00 to 17:00. Tunnel closed. Detour via Provincial Highway 9D.
4. 149.117 km – 153.941 km (Zhongren Tunnel southbound)
Traffic system maintenance on July 31, August 4–5, 7, 09:00 to 21:00. Southbound closure. Detour via Provincial Highway 9D.
5. 149.117 km – 153.941 km (Zhongren Tunnel northbound)
Traffic system maintenance on August 6, 11–12, 14, 09:00 to 21:00. Northbound closure. Detour via Provincial Highway 9D.

1. 155.01 km – 158.195 km (Renshui Tunnel)
Mobile sweeping every Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00.
2. E&M inspection from March 3 to December 31, 08:00 to 18:00 daily, excluding holidays. Fixed-location operations in turnout bays.
3. 155.09 km – 158.038 km (Renshui Tunnel)
Traffic system maintenance on August 14,
20:00–22:00: Southbound closed, northbound one-lane alternating. 22:00–24:00: Northbound closed, southbound one-lane alternating.

Bridge reconstruction from July 7 to September 30. Original bridge closed during construction. Use temporary side roads. No work on holidays.

Reminder for Mountain Roads
Due to earthquake impacts, falling rocks are common. Avoid mountain roads during or after heavy rainfall. Always monitor weather and road conditions in advance, and plan accordingly. Use the DGH Real-Time Info Service (https://168.thb.gov.tw), the "Happy Highway" app, or traffic broadcasts.
