Abstract A Study on the Agriculture and Plant Utilization along Chui-lu Historic Trail,Taroko This study lasts one year, from July l,1997 to June 30,1998. As natural vegetation is what humans depend on for hunting and habitation,so agricuture is a material basis on which human lives sustain and grow. On studying the agriculture conditions of Bokusui,Batagan, and Bulowan, the rich imformation from the old documents helps us understand more throughly and profoundly the land resources and crop products of the three important communities located seperately along Chui-lu Historic Trail. With this,we then proceed to the fieldwork investigating the more complicated subjects, such as the inheritance and sharing of land, the choice of crops for rotation ,the decision of planting time a year round, etc. . As to natural vegetation, this study has used a careful and successive plot method calculating and analyzing the vertical distribution of the plants on Mt. Chui-lu and the horizontal distribution of those on the big broken ridge,Duanyai.Based on this are the individual inquiring work among the Atayal Tribe, recording and sorting the names of cultivated crops as well as wild plants in the Atayal language, and also the explanation of their significance in culture. The suggestions drawn from this study for the future management are as follows: 1.Plan for a more complete research on the names of the plants in the Atayal Tribe. 2.Collect from all sources as many as possible the plants of different cultivar in order to maintain the biodiversity of genes. 3.Build a garden where the cultivated crops and wild plants rich in cultural significance are grown and displayed as living materials for education. The suggested site is the Bulowan Recreation Area or the scheduled Holiu Natural Education Center.
